Scion by James Islington

TL;DR: A really fun SF thriller!
Source: NetGalley, so many thanks to the publisher! And thank you Me for purchasing this one.

Plot: Azure is guarding a woman who is being hunted and it’s nothing like what he expected.
Characters: They were a delight. Truly.
Setting: This was dark and dingy but gave just enough detail to enhance the story.
Thriller: It wasn’t super anxiety inducing but it kept me turning the pages.

Summary:

My job, when you think about it, isn’t so different from a lot of people’s. I have to deal with a ton of boring planning. Inconvenient hours. Some pretty awkward face-to-face interactions. And like most of us, I’m really only clocking in to try and crawl out from beneath my debts.

The more old-fashioned crowd do still get hung up on the ‘killing people’ part, I guess, but that’s a them problem: it’s been perfectly legal to take out lifers for ages. Besides, once ultrawealthy morons realised they had a way to live forever—limited resources be damned—there was only ever going to be one genuinely practical deterrent. So someone’s got to do it.

And luckily, my genetic compatibilities make me really, really good at it.

Still. This next job… I don’t know. It’s something I haven’t had to deal with in years. Kind of the opposite of my regular duties. Strange, that it got thrown my way.

I’m sure it’ll all go totally fine though.

Thoughts:

I wasn’t expecting a ton coming from this, but I was very excited for it. A short, punchy thriller? Especially about bodyguarding? I love that, and I was not disappointed in this one. Azure is hired to guard a woman that some very talented individuals seem to be dead set on removing. Things get interesting and then wild, and I believe we’re setting up for a great series.

I can’t give too much away on this without spoiling it but lets see. The world here is great. We have the bones shown to us, where death has been tricked but then society turned on those who stopped death. Azure makes his living taking those people out as working as an Assassin is a legal and high paying job.

He’s occasionally hired for protection work and receives a job he can’t refuse and finds himself guarding an old woman – an anomaly in this world. This is a great setup. The characters are delightful. Azure is quipy, fairly morally gray, and I loved the Old Woman (no names, no spoilers). I even enjoyed the AI that assisted for a very small chunk of this.

If you’re at all interested in this, then yes. I really recommend it. It’s short, punchy, and fun. I am very much looking forward to the next book.
