Suramar. Stupid, sweet Suramar. I can’t decide if I hate you or love you.
Suramar is the stomping ground of the Nightfallen, Night Elves who cut themselves off in an attempt to save their city from the Legion. During that time, a very long time, they became dependent on the Moonwell (think Blood Elves and the Sunwell) which twisted them into the Nightfallen. Now the city has aligned with the Legion and you’re working for a small rebel group trying to take their great city back.
Honestly, they can have the city. I think my problem with Suramar is just my own personal taste in zones. The City portion of the zone is cramped, super tightly packed with mobs, most of who are hostile to you till you receive a disguise to frolic around the city in (see above image). The problem is that every few feet a certain mobs can see through your disguise at varying speeds. So if you do happen to get busted you’ll be fighting at least three or four mobs at once. That kind of claustrophobia kills me. The best part of the city, besides the tiny skipping Nightfallen children, is the grappling hook’s return! You can use it, Assassin’s Creed style, to leap from roof to roof.
Outside the city I find much better. It’s a half ruin, half beautiful landscape. I love a lot of the mobs, and the quests here are incredibly unique. You work out of a cave, recruiting members to your rebellion and setting up portals around the zone (mostly the city from hell). You also have to keep most of your main quest givers jacked up on Ancient Mana, the stuff that comes from the Moonwell and is used as a currency in the area. I’m not messing around when I call these guys addicts. According to the story if they starve enough they turn into Withered, mindless husks (again think the Blood Elves on the Isle of Quel’dinas). It gets me every time, I can’t help but crack up every time I have to feed the little addicts. If you let the go for too long they actual curl up on themselves, twitch and scratch. Luckily the Ancient Mana comes from everything – killing mobs, gathering, and special nodes around the zone.
The final point of interest is the ruined portions of the zone. You’ll spend a lot of time in these, tracking down ley lines in the old sewers or questing for more Withered and artifacts. If I had to guess the whole left half of the zone has a underground system to it somehow. And it’s filled to the brim with spiders and spider demons. Every time I go inside I hear Ron Wesley.
There is a ton of Night Elf lore in the zone as well! I won’t go into all of it, but as someone who’s almost always played a Nelf this was super fun for me. It’s definitely a unique zone from the sprawling city, to the beautiful landscape, and finally to the spider infested underground ruins. It’s not complete as of yet, we’re still getting new content in the next patch, so I can’t give you a concise story. You also HAVE to do it to unlock world quests. I think it’s definitely the most engaging of all the zones, keeping you there constantly. But it’s the zone I’m most torn on. It’s separate from all the others for this. I feel like I’ll never be rid of it but a tiny part of me is okay with that. We’ll see how this shapes up.
