Night Witch by Jaymin Eve

TL;DR: What a strange and disappointing drop from book one.
Source: NetGalley, so many thanks to the publisher!

Plot: Logan is perfect and our quests are easier than we think!
Characters: Honestly the somewhat fun characters we had in book one just became the opposite of fun here.
Setting: The setting was okay, honestly. It’s a return to the same place from book one and I liked that.
Fantasy: This one is mainly just witches and mates and if there was more I was disappointed.

Summary:

Welcome to year two at Weatherstone College…

Last year, after coming face to face with darkness and lethal monsters, Logan Kingston, my sworn enemy and sometimes ally, brought my first year to an explosive ending. There’s a bond between us that I can’t explain, but I just know he’s hiding something. Maybe I don’t fully trust any spellcaster, but there’s no denying my draw to him.

I’m not going to lie, I haven’t felt myself since then, and I’m dreading returning to Weatherstone.

Thoughts:

I don’t know what it is about sequels but you’d think when an author has such a fun start they’d manage to keep it up for book two. In this case you’d be solidly wrong. Night Witch takes everything that made Spellcaster fun and leaves it sitting outside the college gates while it waltzes into every trope it can manage.

The relationship that felt genuinely antagonistic in book one jumps straight into ‘you’re my MATE’ and we’re told this repeatedly… over and over and over. There is an abundance of caretaking, and from someone who loves caretaking I have to say, I think it was too much. The writing, which wasn’t spectacular but forgivable before, became even worse.

Overall this was just incredibly cringey. It’s obviously not for me and I don’t know that it’s even a great follow-up to what was a fun first book. I can’t recommend it, and I don’t know that I’ll be trying any further books from this author.
