Cold Eternity by S.A. Barnes

TL;DR: A delightful spooky time.
Source: NetGalley, thank you so much!

Plot: Woman on the run takes a questionable job in a dark spaceship full of bodies.
Characters: We’re pretty limited on this, but I enjoyed who we had. Nothing mind blowing here.
Setting: The highlight of this book. I found the ship exceptionally creepy.
Horror: S.A. Barnes did some great twists with some familiar tropes. I looooved the horror part of this.

Summary:

Halley is on the run from an interplanetary political scandal that has put a huge target on her back. She heads for what seems like the perfect place to lay low: a gigantic space barge housing the cryogenically frozen bodies of Earth’s most wealthy citizens. The ship and its cryo program are long defunct, but Halley starts to think she sees figures crawling in the hallways, and there’s a constant scraping, slithering, and rattling echoing in the vents. It’s not long before Halley realizes she may have gotten herself trapped in an even more dangerous situation than the one she was running from….Also by S.A. Barnes: Dead Silence, Ghost Station.

Thoughts:

Yet again, S.A. Barnes has entertained me thoroughly. This one is one I’m going to remember for a long time, I loved the premise. A woman on the run takes a job babysitting the security system of a giant ship of cyrogenetically frozen celebrities and rich people from years past. It’s dark, the ship is slowly falling apart and the schedule means she only gets three hours of sleep at a time. What a fantastic combination!

This one’s strongest attribute was it’s setting. It really sold me on the ship and I enjoyed that a lot. It was dark, it was creepy, and from the beginning I had that feeling of ‘this is a terrible idea’. The frozen people she could see, the shadows in the corners, all of it was great.

My only true complaint was the weird relationship she had with some captive AI on the trip. There is a bit of history there, she once visited the ship as a child and spoke with one, and it made for a very… strange relationship? I didn’t love that.

However the rest of the story was fun. This author continues to tickle me with these horror stories and I’m always down for the newest one. This was not a disappointment in the least.
