TL;DR: Another fun entry in this series, this one had me laughing less than the first and the twist was a bit predictable but I enjoyed myself regardless.
Source: NetGalley, and I purchased a copy – so thanks to the publisher and myself!
Plot: Cy is a bounty hunter chasing the person who kidnapped and killed her cousin. We met her briefly in the first book and now we return as she also meets back up with the Calamity crew to find this kidnapper.
Characters: Cy is a bit of the ‘hard edge’ woman we get a lot in romance novels but we got a lot of Itzel and I would eat a book about Itzel up, so I’m pleased.
Setting: Most of the book takes place on a primarily aquatic island, which is cool! It wasn’t super detailed but I still had a lot of fun with it.
Romance/Scifi: The romance, though here didn’t over take the story. I enjoyed a lot of the sci-fi aspects and touches too. It’s very Sci-fi lite so if you’re on board with that, it’s great.
Thoughts:
I really loved Calamity last year, and Fiasco is the follow up to that novel involving the crew of the Calamity. We get very little of our characters from Calamity and our primary PoV character for Fiasco was a bit of a surprise! The romance between her and Micah, the ship’s medic, is integral to the plot but we focus more on the pursuit and apprehension of a kidnapper haunting the system.
Cy is a bounty hunter who has been hunting this kidnapper since she was a young adult. She’s scarred (literally and figuratively) and a jaded and is given a job that she thinks will let her finally catch the culprit. To do this she has to work with the Calamity crew (for the second time) and return to her home world. Her romance in this revolves around Micah, the crew’s medic but doesn’t overly overpower the plot. This is something I really appreciate in these books. Constance Fay does a great job of keeping these books plot forward and romance secondary.
I’ll say the twist in this was fairly predictable, at least for me I saw this coming from a mile away, and a few things such as Micah’s sense of augmented smell felt a little dues ex machina. However on the whole I could ignore those and enjoy the book for all it was. If you enjoyed Calamity I think Fiasco is a fun follow-up and worth your time.
4 out of 5 super noses
