TL;DR: While not as good for me as book one I definitely still had a lot of fun.
Source: NetGalley, thank you so much to the publisher!
Plot: Sparkles and stoic knights, and banter. Our Queen and Golden Beacon get trapped in fairy trials.
Characters: Hilarious. I wish we’d had more of other queens, but that’s what the next book is for!
Setting: I really enjoyed the setting on this. This world is fun and very interesting.
Fantasy/Romance: I wanted just a hair more longing, but fun nevertheless.
Summary:
Queen Lorelei is a notorious fae seductress, with a trail of broken hearts in her wake. But behind her glamorous lifestyle and sparkling mask lurks a dangerously intelligent woman who’d do anything to keep her people safe, including kidnap the empire’s most famous hero.
The virtuous high general Gerard de Moireul represents all that is moral and true. He has to, after his parents were executed for treason. The last thing he needs is the Queen of Balravia, who showers glitter and rainbow-colored sparkles everywhere she goes without the slightest regard for good taste, decorum, or royal dignity.
They’re opposites in every way, but when they’re swept up together in a grand–and deadly–fae tournament, they discover all of each other’s most hidden truths–and how perfectly they might be suited for each other after all.
Thoughts:
Oh I loved book one in The Queens of Villainy, and while this one wasn’t quite as good for me I still had a fantastic time. Lorelei, our Fae Queen, has kidnapped the Golden Beacon and we finally see what it is these two have going on. The banter, the rivalry, it’s on full display here and its so fun.
My only complaint is that I didn’t feel quite as much of the angst, the longing that the book seemed to hint at between the two. I ended the book almost wishing they’d remained friends, close friends but friends. That’s probably just my taste though, and I had a lot of fun with the trials they are forced into when Lorelei’s plans go awry.
We get a few more hints at the world at large and it feels like things are going to tip off in book three (which is not scheduled for release till 2027?!). If you enjoyed book one, definitely pick up book two. It’s a good time and Lorelei is a real gem of a character. A sparkly good time.
